Happiness is not just happiness. In any case it is different for different people. In fact, there are various kinds of happiness.
Some of them are short-lived others live on the long-term and one can be considered permanent if not eternal.
One kind of happiness may be connected with food, with a good drink and with other “edible” things. It is also said the happiness in a thing, linked to a material thing. That is, this kind of happiness is linked to an external thing, something that makes you feel good, that makes you say “I am happy”. This is the short-lived kind of happiness.
A second kind of happiness is that of the advantage over somebody else. A comparison or even competition. It makes you feel good or happy to know that you are a better runner or whatever you do better than your neighbor. This has also been called “the comparison game”. This kind of happiness is very unstable. If one fails, his happiness may turn into unhappiness and even into a sense of worthlessness. It is just the measuring ourselves with another person and its pursuit can tend to oppress others. This is certainly not the kind most people are looking for. It is too short-lived and it is also selfish.
Happiness can never be complete if it tends to oppress others.
A third kind of happiness is linked to blessedness. The happiness comes from seeing the good in other people. It also comes from doing good for others. It is an action regarding others. In a certain sense, this kind of happiness is the opposite of that we call the second kind. This kind looks for doing good to others and not to be better than the others. It is therefore certainly the kind most people would look for in their community, their family and in the world. For the time being, this kind seems to be limited. If this limit is necessary or not, may be shown by the further evolution of mankind.
The fourth kind of happiness is an elevated state of mind. It is true happiness because it comes from your heart. From the heart that knows that love and trust are the basis of his or her life. And for this reason happiness is a consequence of this knowledge. It is the knowledge of the heart and not measurable scientifically. It is a pervading state of being. In a certain sense, it is the extension of the third kind.
This happiness cannot be taken away from the person who experiences it. Many people are moving towards this state and may get glimpses of a state of bliss while on their way to achieving true happiness. It is worthwhile to continue the search for it until this happiness is part of your Self.
